How Mercari's fees work

  1. 1

One number: 10%, and it includes the shipping

Sellers pay 10% of the item price plus any shipping the buyer is charged. That second half is what separates Mercari from a flat marketplace percentage: a $100 item with $10 shipping pays a $11 fee, not $10. The 2024 experiment that made selling free for a year ended on January 6, 2025 — the current structure has held since.

  2. 2

Free shipping moves the fee base, not the cost

Offer free shipping and the buyer pays only the price, so the 10% is taken on the price alone — but the label is still yours, and it now comes entirely out of your margin. The calculator keeps the two numbers separate: what the buyer is charged, and what the label costs you.

  3. 3

The buyer pays their own 3.6%

Since January 6, 2025, the buyer-protection fee replaced the old seller-side payment processing: 3.6% of price plus shipping, added at checkout. It is not your cost, but it is why a listed price looks a few percent higher to the buyer than on a platform without it — the calculator shows the all-in number so pricing decisions start from what the buyer actually sees.

  4. 4

    Getting the money out

Cashing out runs $2 per bank transfer or $3 for instant pay to a debit card, per transfer — so selling in batches and withdrawing less often is genuinely cheaper. The rest of the cost picture: label prices moved about 1% on average on February 18, 2025 (with cheaper Ground Advantage options at some weights), and since March 10, 2025 a carrier weight or size adjustment carries an 8% penalty on the adjusted cost.

Recent changes

Mercari rewrote its fee model twice in a year; the current one dates to January 6, 2025.

Jan 6, 2025

Seller fees return

The zero-fee year ended: sellers pay 10% on price + buyer-paid shipping, buyers pay a 3.6% protection fee, and the separate payment-processing fee disappeared.

Feb 18, 2025

Label rates repriced

Prepaid label rates moved about 1% on average, with Ground Advantage lanes that came in cheaper at some weights.

Mar 10, 2025

Overage penalty

When a carrier adjusts shipping for weight or size, the seller pays the adjusted cost plus 8% — the reason to weigh and measure honestly on every listing.

Questions

What does Mercari take on a $50 sale?

Five dollars — 10% of the item price. If the buyer also pays $8 shipping, the fee is $5.80, because Mercari's 10% applies to the shipping the buyer is charged as well. A label that costs you $8 comes off your side separately.

Is there still a payment-processing fee for sellers?

No. Until early 2024 it was 2.9% + $0.50 on each sale; the fee moved to the buyer as the 3.6% buyer-protection fee when the current structure took over on January 6, 2025. Sellers pay the 10% and nothing else on the sale itself.

What does the buyer pay in total?

Price plus shipping plus 3.6% on that total. A $100 item with $10 shipping checks out at $113.96. The calculator shows this number because it is the one that has to compete with other listings.

Does offering free shipping save me money?

It lowers the fee — 10% of the price instead of 10% of price plus shipping — but you also stop collecting the shipping, so the label moves from the buyer's side to your margin. Whether it helps depends on the item: the calculator lets you enter both and compare.

How much does it cost to get paid?

$2 per bank transfer or $3 for instant pay to a debit card, charged per transfer. Withdrawing less often lowers the cost per sale; the fees do not depend on the amount transferred.

Is Mercari the same everywhere?

No. This calculator models the US marketplace and its January 2025 structure. Mercari Japan and the European operations run their own fee schedules entirely.

The figures follow Mercari's fee-restructure announcement effective January 6, 2025 and the 2025 shipping-label revisions, corroborated across independent coverage and re-checked October 14, 2026:

Mercari's help center blocks automated requests from this region, so the numbers were verified against the announcement coverage rather than scraped live. If Mercari changes a rate, this tool is updated with the rest of the fee cluster.
